Although the Philadelphia Eagles easily defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in Sunday’s Super Bowl, the competition for viewers’ attention through advertisements was, in many respects, considerably more difficult.
In order to compete for viewers, advertisers relied on celebrity and familiarity, as about 50 businesses purchased time during the program. Although thirty-second advertisements can cost up to $8 million each, they have the potential to be viewed by the 120 million people who are expected to turn in.
In a crowded field, these were a few locations that stuck out.
One item is crossed off Issa Rae’s bucket list.
In a recent interview with CNN, actress, writer, and producer Issa Rae stated, “(Shooting a Super Bowl commercial) has always been on my bucket list.” “So, being able to do that was exciting.”
Rae featured in a brand-new Turbo Tax commercial. When asked about her favorite Super Bowl commercial, she declined, stating that the one she just shot is now her favorite. She claimed to be familiar with TurboTax, having previously used it to do her taxes. Alright!
Eugene Levy raises his eyebrows.
In a commercial for Little Caesar’s crazy puffs, comedian Eugene Levy’s eyebrows shot out of his head.
From a nearby baby’s face (posing as a mustache) to a visit with amazed caterpillars screaming “we’re not worthy,” his trademark eyebrows dropped off his face in astonishment at (one hopes) the deliciousness of the puffs.
When Levy discovered “there are bacon ones?” the eyebrows went back to flapping.
A seal as a seal? Of course, why not?
Every year, there’s at least one really strange Super Bowl, and this year’s entry was a Mountain Dew Baja Blast with Seal—a seal.
The British artist Seal was reclining on a rock, looking like a seal with a human face, and performing his 1994 hit song, “Kiss from a Rose.”
Why? I have no idea.
Regarding that Barry Keoghan ad featuring the donkey…
In one sense, Barry Keoghan was venturing into uncharted terrain for his first Super Bowl commercial, the SquareSpace promo, but he did it with a well-known co-star.
Similar to his highly praised performance in the 2022 movie “The Banshees of Inisherin,” the actor makes an appearance with a donkey in a recent Squarespace advertisement. Both the ad and “Banshees” were shot in his home country of Ireland.
What does he have to do with donkeys, then?
“I don’t know, but we have a lot of chemistry,” the “Saltburn” star said with a giggle to CNN last week.
Keoghan rides a donkey throughout the countryside in the advertisement to promote the design-driven platform that assists users in creating websites.
During the Super Bowl advertisements, Elon Musk makes an impression.
These days, it’s impossible to avoid Elon Musk, and even though he wasn’t present at the Super Bowl in New Orleans, one of his businesses was featured prominently in an advertisement.
T-Mobile declared that Starlink, Musk’s global network of low-orbit satellites that offer internet connectivity, would be available to its users. Through July, the service is free for all users, and T-Mobile announced that it was also extending an invitation to rival Verizon and AT&T users to test it out for free.
Where its towers cannot reach, Starlink will give T-Mobile customers access to the internet. That is the business strategy of Starlink: United recently declared that it will be expanding its Starlink service to offer ultra-high-speed service on aircraft. Additionally, Musk frequently makes headlines by providing free Starlink service in areas affected by natural disasters.
The Dunkin’ commercial mocks complex coffee, replete with tracksuits.
Dunkin’ Donuts packed a lot into their Super Bowl commercial, including a “Java Jam Battle of the Coffee Brand Bands” with Ben and Casey Affleck and Bill Belichick, as well as Jeremy Strong “trying to find the character” while submerged in a coffee vat.
Naturally sporting DunKings track suits, the squad slams (sorry!) into an unidentified green blazer-wearing team from, well, another coffee establishment, complaining sharply that they had to wait 30 minutes to “get my name spelled wrong on the cup.”
Perhaps ironically, Starbucks just announced that its baristas will once again write customers’ names on cups as part of a push by new CEO Brian Niccol.
After 35 years, Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal re-watch “When Harry Met Sally.”
Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan reunited over thirty years after the romance comedy “When Harry Met Sally” debuted in theaters. Crystal and Ryan went back to the renowned Katz’s Deli in New York City to recreate one of the movie’s most well-known moments in honor of the 35th anniversary of their favorite film.
Crystal and Ryan have recreated the famous scene from rom-com movies for a Hellmann’s mayonnaise commercial, sitting at the same table where they first filmed that notorious 1989 supper.
The pair said in an interview with CNN that they never imagined their reunion from “When Harry Met Sally.” Then, however, the ideal project appeared.
Ryan, who plays Sally in the commercial “When Sally Met Hellmann’s,” is, to put it mildly, ecstatic when she bites into her turkey sandwich with Hellmann’s mayonnaise.
Nike highlights the achievements of female athletes.
This year, Nike’s 60-second commercial highlighted female athletes and the inconsistencies of being a female athlete.
A voiceover, including track champion Sha’Carri Richardson, Olympic gymnast Jordan Chiles, basketball player Caitlin Clark, and others, declared: “You can’t be demanding.” You can’t be persistent. You cannot prioritize yourself.
Thus, prioritize yourself.
The commercial continues by showcasing the women’s accomplishments and triumphs.
“No matter what you do, you will fail. Win, then,” the voiceover ends.
The commercial closes with a picture of Chiles in an upside-down, one-handed posture, showcasing the athleticism that has made her famous.
In a Meta advertisement, a million-dollar banana
Although the star-studded advertisement was about Meta’s smart glasses (made in partnership with Ray-Ban), the banana was undoubtedly the main attraction.
Actor Chris Pratt watches in horror as Chris Hemsworth consumes a banana that was previously duct-taped to a wall in a commercial about wearable technology. Chris tells Chris that the banana is actually a work of art called “Comedian” that is valued at $6.2 million. (Yes, the entire thing is a banana duct taped to a wall.)
Late last year, the price tag on the eye-popping banana was up for sale. In 2019, the artwork brought $120,000 at auction. Fortunately, grocery store produce inflation is still far lower than that of the art gallery.
The goal of Harrison Ford’s Jeep commercial is to bring Americans together—over EVs.
Electric vehicles have caused division in America at a time when practically everything has been political. Despite the fact that there is no such thing as a “EV mandate,” President Donald Trump has denounced it. He signed an executive order eliminating tax benefits and subsidies for electric vehicles.
However, automakers have made significant investments in EVs and have a vested interest in encouraging Americans to purchase them. Harrison Ford was employed by Jeep to persuade consumers that purchasing an electric vehicle (EV) was just as acceptable as purchasing a conventional gas-guzzler.
You don’t have to be friends or agree with other drivers to wave to them, according to the patriotic advertisement that supported freedom of choice. Additionally, it stated that consumers are entitled to choose the type of vehicle they purchase.
During a beer commercial, Catherine O’Hara pulls out her pickleball paddle.
Catherine O’Hara is capable of playing pickleball. The comedian and actress also likes to occasionally drink beer. That clarifies why she seems so at ease in that Michelob Ultra ad.
In the commercial, the Emmy winner and Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe compete against professional and amateur pickleball players in an attempt to win Michelob beer.
“Playing this with Willem was a lot of fun,” the “Schitt’s Creek” star remarked. He worked well with others. Willem is humorous and carefree. He doesn’t take himself seriously, despite having done a lot of incredible serious roles.
