President Donald Trump has confirmed that he will attend Super Bowl 59 in New Orleans on Sunday, February 9, making him the first sitting U.S. president to do so. The historic decision follows the announcement that Trump will also be featured in a pre-taped interview with Fox News host Bret Baier, which will air earlier in the day.
A Presidential First at the Super Bowl
Trump, 78, is set to witness the highly anticipated showdown between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles at Caesars Superdome. His presence is expected to bring heightened security, especially following the recent New Year’s Eve terrorist attack in New Orleans that left 14 people dead.
Fox’s decision to air a pre-recorded interview with Trump at 3:00 p.m. ET ahead of its Super Bowl coverage marks a return to tradition, where the sitting president typically participates in a pregame interview. His conversation with Baier, recorded at Mar-a-Lago, will be his first sit-down with a major network since returning to the presidency last month.
Trump’s Super Bowl Connections
Though Trump has not publicly declared his support for either team, he has praised the Chiefs on his social media platform, Truth Social, following their AFC Championship victory.
“What a GREAT Team, Coach, Quarterback, and virtually everything else, including those fantastic FANS that voted for me (MAGA!) in record numbers,” Trump posted.
Star-Studded Super Bowl Weekend
Trump won’t be the only high-profile figure at the Super Bowl. Pop superstar Taylor Swift, who is dating Chiefs’ tight end Travis Kelce, is also expected to attend.
The game serves as a rematch of Super Bowl 57, where Kansas City edged out Philadelphia 38-35. The Chiefs are now seeking an unprecedented three-peat, a feat never before achieved in NFL history.
A Return to Presidential Interviews
Trump’s participation in the Fox interview contrasts with former President Joe Biden’s decision to skip pregame interviews in his last two years in office. However, Trump himself declined an interview with NBC during his first term in 2018.
Super Bowl Sunday, already the biggest sports event of the year, takes on a political twist with Trump’s attendance and Fox interview.
