After defeating a Tottenham Hotspur team eliminated from a cup competition for the second time in three days, Aston Villa advanced to the FA Cup’s fifth round for the first time in ten years.
After losing badly to Liverpool in the second leg of the semi-final on Thursday and then losing at Villa Park on Sunday, Tottenham was eliminated from the Carabao Cup and now has only the Europa League to hope for this season.
A goalkeeping blunder allowed Villa to score after 59 seconds, giving the home team a perfect start. Morgan Rogers made a brilliant move in the middle of the field, setting up Jacob Ramsey, whose seemingly innocuous shot was intercepted by Antonin Kinsky.
The Spurs goalie produced a number of excellent saves to restrict Villa from scoring more goals in the first half, but he was powerless to stop Rogers’ tap-in for his 11th goal of the year. Despite Mathys Tel, a 19-year-old, cutting the deficit in half, Spurs were unable to save the match.
The main talking points are broken down by our writers Jay Harris and Jacob Tanswell.
It's a debut goal for @SpursOfficial's Mathys Tel ⚪️
